To Give Or Not To Give?

“If you wait until you can do everything for everybody, instead of something for somebody, you’ll end up not doing nothing for nobody.” -Malcom Bane

You own a business, you know you want to give back to the community, but you aren’t sure where to start. I completely understand the feeling. When we first started giving back to the community I felt completely buried under different great organizations, unsure of which one to choose. Allow me to give you three tips as you’re looking for organizations to donate to.

  1. First take a deep breath, it’s not a life or death situation and many organizations do a great job. When looking at different organizations ask yourself, “what am I passionate about and does this organization align with that passion?”
  2. Get creative, money is not always the best thing to donate. While donating money is not a bad idea, sometimes your talents are worth far more to an organization.
  3. You’re in business for a reason! Choosing an organization that gets your name out while giving back can be a great idea. Many organizations place sponsor names in booklets, on social media, or announce your name at an event.

Growing up, Justin and I were in 4-H, we absolutely loved the program and appreciated what we learned from it. Over the years 4-H taught us responsibility, working with others, how to lead meetings, and hard work. This organization greatly benefits from community involvement when business owners donate money for livestock sales and college scholarships. As a business owner you go to the fair, bid at auctions, and get to see exactly where your money is going! This year Justin and I enjoyed going to multiple fairs, investing in students, and giving back to the communities and organizations that gave us so much.

Find an organization you love, start small (whatever you can give helps), and have fun! Because true giving comes from a heart of generosity.
